Why God?

Peter, a man in his 40th, sat down with a strange warmth feeling in his heart that came after an intense conversation. He still has many questions in his head, but felt content.

Conversations and food were the main theme for this family gathering. Friends and members of the family were there to support them through this difficult period. Everyone was trying to comfort the family with their presence, smiles, or a simple pat on the back.

Peter turned his eyes on his mother, who is now getting weaker by the day because of her sickness combined with age. His dad is always stands by her side, patiently introducing guests who are leaving to her, apparently her eyesight is not as good as it was. Then he turned his head, watching his dear sister helped by her husband cleaning up the table after family dinner. He felt moved that her sister tried to show strength for their mother, even when she is still taking chemo treatment herself. “Why God? Why them?” thought Peter.

His daughters are now talking to other family members and his wife is busy saying goodbye to the guest who had to leave. They are the reason that Peter is doing though work as security guard at clubs. A tough man he is, he becomes a different person whenever he’s around them. He only want to give the best for his daughters.

The whole situation is not easy for Peter. There are so many things that he didn’t understand. If his parents are good people, good Christians, then why should the family experience such turmoil? How come God allowed this suffering in their family? If this happens to his father and mother, what will happen then to his wife and children? Why?

His father always says, “My son, sometimes we cannot understand God’s plans, what we can do is to hang on to Him and in the end we will see God’s beautiful plan.”

But Peter wanted to see God’s plan now. He wanted to understand. But he couldn’t.

He now looked at the young minister from his father’s church, whom he just had a conversation with. The minister was there to pray for the family.

The minister said something to him that did not really answer his question, but brought him peace.

“Why is this happening to us?” asked Peter.

The minister said, “The beauty of believing is that we can and have the right to complain and ask God directly about what had happened to us. Without Him, you will only become desperate because there’s no solution. He will not give us something that we cannot carry.”

He continued, “God is trying to talk to you Peter, that is why you were having this feeling. God loves you for who you are, and through this, God wants to show you that God never leaves the family. Your questions came because God is talking to you and you want to understand Him. We are here because you are not alone in your times of sorrow.”

He felt amazingly warm inside after the minister prayed for him. His job taught him to be a tough man, but his watery eyes cannot lie, he did feel something. He felt God is trying to reach him. Peter had questions, and still is, but feel content that whatever the answer is, it will show God’s love on him.
