Thank God, my dissertation is finally finished. It has been a long journey that marks only a new chapter in my life. I have so much to thank for, to God, and to the people surround me who have helped me finishing what seemed to be a lonesome work at times. I submitted my dissertation in September, and I am going to defend it at 20th December, 11.45, at the aula of the VU University, Amsterdam. I still need to do some small revisions and some preparations for the defense. My parents and fiance, and hopefully my sister are planning to come for the promotion.
On the other side, I also feel sad to think about the people, environment, work, and friendly faces that I am going to miss when I return to Jakarta. Next year will be a totally new environment, a new life, and a new journey.
There are still a lot that I have not done here, in the congregation of GKIN Regio Arnhem-Nijmegen and Regio Tilburg. I feel like I am leaving an unfinished work behind. However, it is not my work and it is never going to be. It is God’s work, and I am sure God will send someone suitable for the congregation. I will give my best before my time in the Netherlands ends.

It’s been decided. I finally bought the ticket for Indonesia. January 16th will be the day that I will leave the country that I already considered home. It is not going to be easy, I think, to go back home after so many years living in another part of the world that has a different living culture from Jakarta. It is an exciting moment but would also be a sad day for me.
I have been saying goodbye lately in all my sermons. Somehow I think that I can make it easier for me if I prepare myself before the time comes by saying it out loud. But, every time I have a moment for myself, I become emotional of the thought of leaving this cold country – for instance this post is written on a train on my way back to Arnhem.
It has been an unforgettable experience, a humbling life lesson, and an amazing era in my life. A journey comes to an end, and another begins.
The most difficult part is to say goodbye to the people who have been supporting me all these years. I don’t like goodbyes, but apparently that is how life goes. I am saying goodbye to say hello to a new beginning.

Saudara-saudara,
Pernahkah saudara menonton acara Gordon Ramsay, dengan judul “Kitchen Nightmares”? Ramsay adalah seorang koki terkenal yang dipanggil untuk menolong memperbaiki sebuah restoran yang sudah menurun kualitasnya dan terancam bangkrut dalam waktu seminggu.
Ada sebuah episode yang kebetulan saya tonton mengenai sebuah restoran keluarga yang sekarang ditangani anak menantu keluarga ini. Laki-laki ini kemudian juga berfungsi sebagai koki dan isterinya menjadi kepala pelayan. Koki ini melakukan banyak sekali kesalahan, namun tidak menyadarinya. Makanan yang disiapkannya tidak lagi segar, kebersihan dapur tidak dijaga, dan yang lebih buruk lagi, dia menganggap kehancuran restoran itu bukan salahnya.

Video tadi adalah sebuah kisah nyata, di mana Christian, seekor singa yang diadopsi oleh John Rendall dan Anthony Bourke dari sebuah mal Harrods di Inggris tahun 1969. Christian kemudian menjadi terlalu besar untuk hidup di rumah mereka. Kedua orang ini kemudian mengembalikan Christian ke hutan di Afrika. Setahun setelah melepas Christian ke hutan, John dan Anthony mau menemui Christian untuk melihat apakah Christian masih mengingat mereka, dan ternyata dia masih mengenali John dan Anthony dan bermain dengan mereka.

Saudara-saudara,
Minggu ini kita memasuki masa minggu penantian sesudah kenaikan Tuhan Yesus ke surga dan sebelum turunnya Roh Kudus (Pentakosta) minggu depan. Dalam bahasa Belanda, minggu ini dinamakan juga Weeszondag karena minggu ini bisa dibandingkan dengan perasaan yatim piatu di bumi. Pada saat ini, kita memperingati murid-murid Kristus yang sedang menantikan Roh Penolong. Sungguh sebuah minggu yang membuat murid-murid agak sedikit tegang dan rindu akan pimpinan Roh Penolong yang dijanjikan Yesus.
Hal menunggu ini bisa kita samakan juga seperti orang yang sedang haus. Pernahkah anda kehausan? Maksud saya dengan kehausan bukan hanya ingin minum, namun haus dengan tenggorokan yang kering, bibir yang kering, ludah yang mengering, dan susah untuk bicara lagi. Maksud saya adalah apakah anda pernah benar-benar kehausan? Apa yang anda rasakan, dan apa yang akan anda lakukan kalau anda betul-betul menginginkan sesuatu yang bisa menyelamatkan hidup anda? Tahukah anda apa yang terjadi ketika anda kehausan?

After 11 years, I was finally back at a very special place, the Zendingshuis, Oegstgeest, Leiden. It was the place where KMK STT Jakarta singing group stayed in the Netherlands in July-August 1999 during our Dutch choir tour. The place was the center of Dutch missionary projects where they trained missionaries before they left for new areas in spreading the Gospel. It is now an apartment, but the owner is not allowed to change anything from the outlook of the original building. Coming back here brings smile and good memories.
This is the deciding month where I should finish everything about my thesis if I want to be promoted before I go back to Indonesia in January. Please keep me in your prayers.
